Description

Sensoray's Model 812 is a PCI-Express board that simultaneously captures up to eight composite video and eight mono audio signals. Uncompressed video is captured from each video input at full frame rate (30 fps NTSC; 25 fps PAL), resulting in an aggregate frame rate of up to 240 fps (NTSC) or 200 fps (PAL). The board's compact size and single-lane (x1) PCI-Express interface enable it to be plugged into any PCI-Express slot. Its high channel count, simultaneous capture capability, and small footprint make this board a good fit for surveillance and other applications requiring multi-channel vision, image processing, and A/V recording.

Video

A variety of video capture resolutions are supported, including D1, VGA, QVGA, CIF, 4CIF, SIF, and 4SIF. The captured frame format can be YUYV, UYVY, RGB555, or RGB565.

Audio

Audio may be sampled at 8K, 16K, 32K, 44.1K, or 48K Hz.

Digital I/Os

Eight general-purpose digital I/O (DIO) signals are provided for applications such as camera control, status indication, and host signaling. The TTL/CMOS-compatible DIOs can be collectively configured in groups of four to function as inputs or outputs (e.g., 8 in, 8 out, or 4 in/4 out). External circuitry may be connected to the the DIOs through a small terminal block located on the board's rear edge, or to the board's 34-pin header.

Connectors

Two DB15 connectors are available to convey audio/video signals through the board's mounting bracket; one DB15 conveys the video inputs and the other DB15 conveys audio inputs. A 34-pin header is also provided as an alternative to the DB15 connectors, which allows all video, audio and DIO signals to be connected using a single cable.

Cables

Sensoray's 812C1 cable (shown above) breaks out a single DB15 connector onto eight BNC connectors. One 812C1 cable is included with the board, which can be used to connect either eight video or eight audio signals to the board. For both audio and video capture, an additional 812C1 cable must be purchased separately, or the 34-pin header may be used.

Software

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are available for Linux and Windows. The SDKs include drivers, programming samples, and documentation to enable developers to quickly start and create custom applications for the board.

Maximum Channels vs. Maximum Frame Rate

Sensoray bundles the chipset manufacturer's drivers with Model 812 for both Linux and Windows. The Linux driver is a high performance driver that makes possible simultaneous full frame rate capture at D1 resolution from all eight input channels. The Windows driver has lower performance that may require tradeoffs between the number of active channels, resolution, and frame rate.

The following table shows the Maximum Channel vs. Maximum Frame Rate that will reliably result in error-free performance on a typical modern PC/Server. In most cases these performance levels will be enhanced when using higher performance host computers.

Maximum Channels vs. maximum Frame Rate Performance

Driver Active Video Channels Resolution Frames/Second/Channel
NTSC PAL
Linux 1 - 8 VGA, 4SIF/4CIF, D1, or under 30 25
Windows 1 - 4 VGA, 4SIF/4CIF, D1, or under 30 25
5 - 8 QVGA, SIF, CIF, or under30 25
